The trial of a US Army psychiatrist resumed today after more than 40 witnesses described how he carried out a shooting massacre that left 13 dead at the Fort Hood military base in Texas.
Nidal Hasan faces the death penalty if convicted of murder and attempted murder in the November 2009 shootings. He has told jurors he was the gunman.
So far, he has said little in his defence. He mostly watched in silence as victims described how he shouted "Allahu Akbar!" Arabic for "God is great" and drew a weapon and opened fire on unarmed soldiers.
Hasan is representing himself. His standby defence attorneys have accused him of seeking the death penalty and say they'll ask an appeals court to step in to limit their responsibilities.
Hasan questioned none of the witnesses who testified Monday morning.
Jonathan Sims testified about pressing on the neck of a fellow soldier to stop the bleeding. Sims said he, too, was shot while trying to protect the two of them.
He also described hearing a wounded soldier crying out, "My baby! My baby!" One soldier who was killed, Franceska Velez, was pregnant when she died.
