Music legend Dr Bhupen Hazarika's Kolkata residence may be converted into a memorial if the Assam government has its way.
The playback singer and film maker, who died in 2011, lived in a house in Tollygunge area of south Kolkata for decades starting from the 1950s.
Chief Minister Sarbnanda Sonowal said yesterday that the Assam Government wants to convert Hazarika's Kolkata residence into a memorial.
Director of the Assam Bhawan in Kolkata has been instructed to take up the matter with the current owner of the house and obtain the ownership of the property.
Hazarika was awarded the Dada Saheb Phalke Award for his contribution to films.
He had also won the President's National Award for the best filmmaker thrice for 'Shakuntala', 'Pratidhwani', and 'Loti Ghoti' in 1960, 1964 and 1967 respectively.
