The Madras High Court today directed the state government to implement its order on shifting the statue of legendary actor Sivaji Ganesan at a main road junction here and file a compliance report by November 16.
A division bench, comprising Justice Satish K. Agnihotri and Justice K.K. Sasidharan, was hearing a contempt petition filed by one P Nagarajan on implementation of the January 23 court order last year in connection with the writ over removing the statue.
The state government had on September 16 informed the court that it would take two years to build the proposed memorial for the late Tamil actor and till then his statue would remain at its existing location on beach road.
Earlier in the morning, when the petition was taken up, the bench directed the Secretary to the Highways department to appear in person and explain on shifting the statue.
The Secretary submitted that the matter was not related to his department, following which the bench directed the government to file the compliance report of its January 23, 2014 order by November 16.
The contempt petition was filed as there was delay in shifting the statue even after the court asked the government to take a decision on the matter last year.
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had announced in the state assembly last month that government would construct the memorial on the banks of Adyar river.
