HC asks police not to proceed further in honour killing case
Press Trust of India Chennai The Madras High Court today directed Usilampatti police not to proceed further in a case of suspected honour killing of a girl involved in inter-caste marriage and issued notice to authorities to file counter by October 20.
Justice V Ramasubramanian before whom the writ petition filed by R Dilip Kumar, who married the girl, came up, ordered issuance of notice to Special Government Pleader Sanjay Gandhi on behalf of the Home Secretary and the DGP to file counter by October 20.
In his interim order, the judge said, "In the meantime, the investigation by the present investigation officer shall not proceed further."
The petitioner submitted that he belongs to Scheduled Caste and was employed as a driver of the father of the backward community girl. They fell in love and got married on July 22. The girl's parents were against the marriage. The couple went to Palakkad in Kerala, fearing retaliation from the girl's family and surrendered before Pattambi Police.
However, the girl's family went to Pattambi police station and assured them that they will bring them back once inquiry is completed at Usilampatti Police Station.
But after bringing them to Usilampatti, the girl was taken against her wishes with the help of police and others and after that she died under mysterious circumstances, the petitioner alleged.
He sought a direction from the Court to hand over investigation to CBI and take departmental action against police who acted against wishes of the girl and allegedly caused her death.
