HC direction to EC, TN chief electoral officer on DMK plea
Press Trust of India Chennai The Madras High Court has directed the Election Commission of India and the state Chief Electoral officer to file a counter with details of action taken on various representations on electoral rolls made by DMK.
Justice R Subbaiah posted the matter to March 4 for further hearing.
A writ petition was filed by DMK, represented by its Organization Secretary R S Bharathi, seeking a direction to the Election Commission of India to appoint central government officers to recheck the entire voters list published on January 20.
Bharathi submitted that the final electoral list published as on January 20 showed 5,79,15,482 voters, which shows a sudden increase of 1,07,99,636 voters compared to the 2011 list.
As earlier representations to authorities did not yield any response, the present petition was filed seeking a direction to the Election Commission to appoint central government officers to recheck the entire voters list, the petitioner submitted.
