The Madras High Court today directed the Hosur Municipality Commissioner to proceed against contractors collecting road tax from water tankers without any authority and file an action taken report.
Water suppliers in Hosur have filed a petition seeking a direction to the Krishnagiri District Collector and Municipal Commissioner of Hosur Municipality to forbear private contractors from collecting road tax.
Justice N.Kirubakaran, before whom the petition came up, directed that proceedings should be initiated against the private contractors collecting road tax without any authority and action taken report should be submitted.
The petitioners said they had sought action against contractors collecting money from the tanker vehicles illegally as road tax.
Counsel for Hosur Municipality submitted that showcause notices were issued to the contractors and the Muncipality had stated that tanker lorries cannot be levied road tax.
The judge sought action taken report from the Municipal Commissioner in this regard besides directing the Municipality to introduce uniform for its employees and provide identity cards so that no third party can collect money.
The judge also directed the municipality to upload its entire income and expenditure as done by the other municipalities in the official website and file compliance of action taken in January first week.
