Madurai Bench of the Madras High court today directed the Rameswaram Police inspector to investigate into the complaint of irregularities to the tune of Rs.2.40 lakh per month, in supplying goods to the Ramanathaswamy temple in the island.
The petitioner, Subramanian, the Anna trade union secretary of the Madura coats workers cooperative supermarket, said as per accounts record, the supermarket was supplying Rs.Six lakh worth of goods to the temple every month. In reality they supplied only 60 per cent of the goods worth Rs.3.60 lakh, he alleged.
The remaining goods worth Rs.2.40 lakh was sold illegally and the ill-gotten wealth was pocketed by some officials, he alleged.
Justice K.Kalyananasundaram directed the inspector to investigate the case and register the complaint if there was any prima facie material.
The petitioner submitted that stock verification was done in the supermarket's main godown on June28,2013, and it was found that enormous surplus stock of goods had been stored there.
Two staff members of the godown Arumugam and Isakkirajan were suspended in connection with the surplus stock on July 2, 2013.
Subsequent investigation revealed that the surplus stock, which should have been actually supplied to the shrine, had been illegally stocked in the godown for illegal sales.
