Madras High Court today disposed a PIL seeking a direction to recover damages from AIADMK General Secretary for "wilful damages" caused by its volunteers to public during agitation opposing conviction of party supremo Jayalalithaa in a disproportionate wealth case.
The First Bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice M Sathyanarayanan also directed state Home Secretary and DGP to dispose of the representation by V Anbazhagan, Chief Editor of Tamil daily "Dhinamathi" in accordance with law within one month from the receipt of the court order after issuing notices to all concerned parties.
In his petition, Anbazhagan contended that from September 27 after a court in Karnataka convicted Jayalalithaa in the case, there was a tensed situation in the Tamil Nadu.
Volunteers of AIADMK staged dharnas and were attacking private and government buses and damaged public properties, he contended.
He said the damages caused to the properties were videographed and photographed by media which was shown in TV channels and appeared in newspapers.
Quoting a Supreme Court Judgment, he said stern action should be taken against the rioters.
He maintained that the authorities have not taken any action on the volunteers who had caused the damage worth about Rs 200 crore.
