In a relief to gangster-turned- politician Arun Gawli, the Bombay High Court today granted him nearly a two-week long parole to attend to his ailing wife.
The division bench of justices B P Dharmadhikari and A S Chandurkar ordered the authorities to release Gawli, who is sentenced to life imprisonment in a 2008 murder case, on parole on October 21 and ordered him to surrender on November 2.
Gawli, who has been lodged in Nagpur Central Prison, had prayed for release citing his wife's illness. He had said his wife needs to be operated upon on October 25.
He had filed a writ petition in the high court against rejection of his parole leave by Divisional Commissioner Nagpur.
The high court directed the Divisional Commissioner and Jail Superintendent of Central Prison, Nagpur, to release Gawli latest by afternoon on October 21 and ordered Gawli to surrender before on November 2.
Advocate Anil Mardikar and advocate Mir Nagman Ali appeared for Gawli, while advocate Nitin Rode appeared for the respondent (Divisional Commissioner).
In August 2012, Gawli, along with 11 others, had been sentenced to life imprisonment by a special MCOCA court in Mumbai in Shiv Sena corporator Kamlakar Jamsandekar murder case.
