The Centre has been directed by the Delhi High Court to respond to a PIL seeking a direction to set up a committee comprising Olympians and Arjuna awardees for selection of names from Squash for 2013 Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar(RKPP).
A bench of justices S Ravindra Bhat and Najmi Wajiri issued notices to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and Sports Authority of India (SAI) and sought their responses by May 27 on the PIL alleging that the committee, which was set up for selection, had illegally selected N Ramachandran, President of World Squash Federation and also Patron of Squash Rackets Federation of India (SRFI), for the Award in 2011.
The court also called for the files pertaining to the selection procedure followed by the earlier committee while selecting Ramachandran for RKPP 2011.
Filing a PIL through counsel Rahul Mehra, a group of sports enthusiasts and social activists alleged RKPP was granted to Ramachandran who did not fulfill the basic requirements of eligibility and the decision of selection committee was illegal, arbitrary, bad in law and the decision is liable to be set aside.
