HC orders issue of notice to Addnl Govt Pleader
Press Trust of India Chennai The Madras High Court today ordered issue of notice to Additional Government Pleader who sought time to get instructions on a petition seeking a direction to authorities to award compensation for the murder of a scheduled caste woman who married a caste Hindu.
Justice T.S.Sivagnanam, before whom the petition filed by the father of the deceased woman, came up, posted the matter for further hearing to February 6.
The woman, who was working as temporary worker at a primary health centre in Tiruvarur District, fell in love with Palaniappan and married him. Palaniappan's family never accepted the marriage, it was submitted.
The petitioner alleged that Palaniappan's brother murdered his daughter as well as his son-in-law and sought compensation of 75 per cent of Rs seven lakh-the relief to be granted under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Amended Rules, 2014.
The incident apparently shows that the caste system was deep rooted in society, the petitioner said.
He alleged that even after representation to authorities, the relief was not sanctioned nor reply given and so he filed the petition.
