The Orissa High Court today granted interim protection to Baragarh BJD legislator Debesh Acharya, asking the state police not to take any coercive action against the MLA till further orders.
Seeking to quash an FIR registered against him by the Baragarh police for his alleged involvement in the attack on union ministers Santosh Gangwar and Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, the local MLA had approached the High Court.
After a preliminary hearing on the plea, Justice B K Nayak directed the local police to submit the case diary in the court within four weeks and asked the prosecution not to take any action against the petitioner.
BJD activists, led by Acharya, had allegedly attacked the union minister's convoy at Baragarh on June 24 damaging several cars by pelting stones. Both the ministers and the accompanying former chief minister of Jharkhand Arjun Munda had narrowly escaped.
Registering a case under 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC, the Baragarh police had booked several BJD workers, including the MLA. The BJD workers had also shown black flags to the union ministers protesting against their visit to Baragarh.
