The Madras High Court today dismissed the plea for granting parole to a convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
The Madurai bench of the high court comprising Justices M M Sundaresh and N Sathishkumar dismissed the petition filed by Rajeswari, the mother of P Ravi, taking note of the stand of jail authorities that he was not eligible for the parole.
The bench had earlier directed the state's Home Secretary to consider the representation to grant one-month parole to Ravi, a life convict in the case related to assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi on May 21, 1991 at Sriperumbudur near Chennai.
The petitioner had sought parole for his son saying she was getting old and wanted to settle family properties and spend time with him.
The authorities said they considered the representation of Rajeswari and rejected it as her son was not eligible for the relief.
Dismissing the petition, the judges, however, gave liberty to the petitioner to challenge the jail official's order rejecting her request. She had just move the court seeking grant of parole to her son without challenging the prison official's order.
