Disposing of a petition filed by the deceased's son Hasim Memon praying for space in the burial ground for his mother Zubeda Memon's burial, the High Court directed the Barelvi Muslim mosque management to immediately provide space for the purpose, the petitioner's lawyer Prakash Tiwari said.

A single bench of Justice Satish Agnihotri also directed the district administration to deploy adequate security in the city due to the mounting tension.

According to the lawyer, the body of Zubeda Memon, a Deobandi Muslim who died on January 1 at her residence in the Rajnandgaon district headquarters, was lying in her house unburied, after leaders of the Barelvi Muslim community refused to allow her burial in the burial ground of their mosque, due to differences between the two communities.

Earlier too, the Barelvi Muslim community had refused to allow burial of Hasim's father at their burial ground after he passed away on August 2 last year, following which he had filed a writ petition in the High Court on December 12.

Responding to the petition, the court had ordered the district administration to provide security to Hasim's family on December 14.
