Taking serious note of assaults on the resident doctors in government hospitals in Dhule and Thane, the Bombay High Court today asked the Maharashtra government to submit it the CCTV footage of both the incidents.
A bench of Chief Justice Manjula Chellur sought the CCTV footgae of violence in hospitals while hearing a petition by activist Afaq Mandaviya seeking action against doctors who had gone on mass leave last month to protest the attacks.
The court also asked the chief medical officers of Dhule and Thane hospitals to file affidavits on incidents of attack on doctors there in the recent past.
A mob had ransacked a government hospital in Thane and manhandled two doctors on March 30. The attack was triggered by an altercation between the relatives of an injured person and the doctors.
A fortnight earlier, a doctor was brutally assaulted by the relatives of another injured person at Dhule government hospital. Both the incidents have triggered a debate over the lack of security to doctors and other staffers at government hospitals.
Nearly 4,000 resident doctors across Maharashtra had stayed away from the work for about a week last month, demanding enhanced security. They had called off the stir following warnings from the Bombay High Court and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis against persisting with the strike.
The judges today also asked the government to inform them about deficiencies in facilities provided to doctors at the hospitals.

The government pleader Milind More said 332 security guards were deployed in the government hospitals in Mumbai recently and more would be deployed.
Advocate General Rohit Deo had earlier assured the high court that the state would deploy at least 500 security guards at the government hospitals in the city by April 5.
