The Bombay High Court today directed newly-appointed Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) and Additional Commissioner of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to submit reports indicating the progress made by them towards easing traffic woes and maintenance of roads across the city.
A division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice M S Sanklecha was hearing a public interest litigation filed by Bombay Bar Association seeking strict implementation of traffic rules and regulations and proper maintenance of roads.
"The traffic police has a new Joint Commissioner of Police. Let him study the problems and submit a report indicating the progress made by the traffic police towards the issue. The Additional Municipal Commissioner shall also submit a report stating what progress the civic body has made since April last year on road repairs and maintenance," the bench said.
The reports have to be submitted by April 7 and the petition will be heard on April 10.
The court was informed by state government advocate A S Saluja that digitisation of data concerning registration number of vehicles post 2006 was complete.
"Information regarding autorickshaws, taxis, trucks and tempos are yet to be collected. That process would be completed by May this year. Earlier, there were 99 CCTV cameras across the city. Additional 118 cameras have been placed. Our proposal for control room is pending with BMC," Saluja said.
The court directed BMC to consider and decide on the proposal. The Corporation has also been asked to indicate by when improvement and strengthening of roads in the city will be completed.
