The Delhi High Court today directed the city government and police to respond to a PIL seeking a direction for appropriate steps to control "illegal" activities in the red light area as the same is affecting the students and also residents of nearby locality.
A bench of Chief Justice D Murugesan and Justice V K Jain issued notices to MCD, the Archiological Survey of India (ASI) besides Delhi government and city police and sought their replies by April 10.
The bench was hearing a PIL filed by Kamran Siddiqui, a social worker, and sought the court's direction "to remove the illegal, immoral and unhygienic activities from G B Road, which are affecting school and college students adversely and nuisance to the residents of near locality"
The petition, filed through counsel Kamran Mallik, says Anglo Arabic School, Ghaziuddin Khan Tomb, controlled by ASI, and a hardware market are situated in the area close to G B Road and school children were exposed to several unsocial activities.
"Smoking, drinking and flash trading and other unsocial activities have been exposed to school-going students at their impressionable age since long period...," as per the plea.
The petitioner said 40 per cent of the sex workers are from Nepal and Bangladesh and due to sex workers' activities, nearby areas including the school and tomb sites, have been encroached and the concerned authorities have failed to act against the illegal activities.
The petitioner sought appropriate steps by the police and the civic agency to control illegal activities.
