The Madurai Bench of the Madras high Court has asked the Director General of Police to study LLB centres in Tamil Nadu and give a report on their functioning, including details of those who are running them.
Justice N Kirubakaran issued the order after Madurai Police explained the modus operandi of a couple, one of whom posed as a lawyer, took houses on rent and then extorted money from the house-owner for vacating the house.
The Judge wanted to know about those who operated the LLB centres and whether they were genuine persons.
In her petition, Jothi, who claimed to be an advocate, said she had rented a house in Thiruparankundram, paid rent without fail, but was asked to vacate on January 27 this year.
She alleged that the house-owner threatened her with dire consequences if she did not vacate and had broken into into the house on May 21 taking away Rs 3.16 lakh and gold ornaments weighing 24 sovereigns. She had moved the court praying for a direction to the Thiruparankundram police to take action against her landlord.
But police said the petitioner did not pass BL (law degree) but claimed to be a lawyer and her husband P Bharathi Ravichadran had filed several similar cases with police. They filed false cases against house-owners to extort money, police said, adding, Ravichandran, a school-dropout, was also involved in criminal cases. The couple were also running an academy where LLB courses were taught, police submitted.
