A division bench comprising Justice K J Sengupta and Justice Asim Kumar Mondal directed the government's transport department to submit a report on action taken and its plans to phase out the polluting vehicles from Kolkata Metropolitan Area (KMA).
The court had earlier asked the transport department to submit a report on the issue today, but it was not satisfied with the content.
The bench then directed the department to again submit a report in a week, which would also inform what the government was doing about illegal autorickshaws.
The high court had in 2009 ordered the phasing out of all 15-year old diesel-operated commercial vehicles from KMA to reduce auto pollution in the city, one of the most polluted in the country.
It had also directed that all autorickshaws in KMA should have four-stroke engines.
The government had allegedly phased out the vehicles as a one-time measure, but did not continue the process by which any such vehicle's permit would automatically be cancelled when it reached the age of 15 years.
