The state Chief Secretary should indicate in his compliance report as to how much period the government would require for making the SVC functional, a division bench of the High Court comprising Justices Virender Singh and Muzaffar Hussain Attar said in an order passed on Wednesday.
The direction followed perusal of previous compliance report filed by the Chief Secretary informing the court that the government has enacted J&K SVC Act and a three-member Vigilance Commission has to be set up.
The Chief Secretary also informed the court that the government is shortly constituting a committee to examine and recommend further amendments in the J&K Prevention of Corruption Act "so as to make it more stringent."
"It is hoped and trusted that the committee will be constituted preferably within two weeks from today (December 19) and it will make its recommendations within one month thereafter," the order read.
The court also asked the Chief Secretary to inform it as to how many properties have been attached and their forfeiture ordered from the date the J&K Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act 2006 came into force.
"The court is pursuing this matter as, in its wisdom, the menace of corruption, if left unchecked would destroy every democratic institution of the state," the order said.
