Observing that the issue required urgent attention, the Bombay High Court today said it would hear a public interest litigation seeking basic amenities such as food, clothing, books and medical facilities for tribal girls in state-run residential schools in Maharashtra on January 8.
Vishnu Gavali, the petitioner, today submitted before the division bench headed by Chief Justice Mohit Shah that the hearing may be expedited.
Gavali contended that since 2011, the tribal development department had not provided essential amenities to these schools.
Further, the girls' hostel at Ulhasnagar in Thane district should be shifted immediately as the inmates had lodged complaints against the authorities alleging harassment, he said.
The basic amenities mentioned in government resolutions of November 2011, April 2013 and June 2013 have not been provided, the PIL says.
In many places, students resorted to agitations, hunger strike, etc., the PIL says.
