Head constable awarded gallantry award posthumously

: A head constable who was killed while attempting to apprehend an anti-social element on charges of smuggling sand in Vellore district will be conferred with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Police Medal for Gallantry' posthumously.
G Kanagaraj, a head constable with Tamil Nadu Police Subordinate Service was being awarded the medal "in recognition of his brave act by sacrificing his life while encountering an anti-social element in an effort to apprehend him..," an official release said.
The incident occurred at Uriyurkuppam village while the anti social was smuggling sand from the Kosasthalai river bed.
The legal heir of the recipient is eligible for a cash prize of Rs five lakh, it said.
On the order of Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, a total of 1,500 police personnel in the rank of Police Constables, Head Constables and equivalent ranks will be awarded the 'Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Constabulary Medals' for this year, it said.
In addition, 120 Fire and Rescue Services personnel in the rank of Leading Fireman, Driver Mechanic, Fireman Drivers and Firemen and 60 Prison Service Personnel in the rank of Grade-I Warders are also being awarded the 'Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Medals" in recognition of their outstanding devotion to duty.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Medal for Excellence in Technical and Specialised Services would be awarded to five personnel, two from the Police radio branch, one police photographer and two from Dog Squad.
These medals will be presented to the recipients at District Headquarters in a ceremonial parade on a convenient date to be fixed by the Director General of Police/Director, Fire and Rescue Services and the Additional Director General of Police and Inspector General of Prisons.
