To improve healthcare facilities in remote and inaccessible areas, the Koraput district administration has decided to organise health camps twice a week in at least 17 panchayats of 14 blocks mostly in remote areas where people are deprived of proper medical attention.
"As it is not possible to open more health centres, it has been decided to open health camps at the remote panchayat headquarters twice a week," Koraput Collector Jaya Kumar V said.
"It has been decided to open the health camps on each Tuesday and Friday from next week. In the next phase more such health camps could be opened," he added.
As per the scheme, a health team, including doctor, from the nearest primary health centre (PHC) will visit the identified panchayat nearest to it on the prescribed day, treat patients and distribute medicine.
Serioius patients will be shifted either to the nearest community health centre (CHC) or to the district headquarters hospital for further treatment.
"To run the health camps on a regular basis we don't need any additional number of doctors or health staff. We have chalked out a strategy for the optimum use of the available manpower with us. The available resources has been so adjusted that the regular health services will not affect concerned PHC on the day of health camp," the collector said.
Apart from opening the health camps, the district administraition has also decided to realign the mobile health units (MHU) of the district.

"Henceforth, MHUs will move into areas which are uncovered by the healthcare facilities rather than covering a radius of 5 to 10 km from the concerned CHC", he said.
The administration has also decided to add four more MHU specially for Maoist-hit and the most remote Kenduguda, Chipakar, Dandabadi and Doraguda panchayats of Boipariguda block.
Situated along Red dominated Malkangiri district, medical facilities are virtually non-existent for these panchayats. People residing in these areas have to trek several miles for medical purpose to reach Boipariguda CHC.
"The four MHU's will be managed by the district mineral fund and those units will exclusively work for these panchayats. At no cost the MHUs could be diverted to any other areas or for any other purpose," the collector said.
