While the city recorded the maximum temperature of 38.1 degrees Celsius, lower than yesterday's 40.5 degrees, it was still three notches higher than average, Met department sources said.

Bankura and Sriniketan in Birbhum district recorded 44.8 degrees and 44.4 degrees respectively, the sources said.

The southern districts, including the metropolis, had little hope of respite soon, with heatwave condition forecast in the city, Howrah, Hooghly, Bankura, Birbhum, West Midnapore, North 24 Parganas, Murshidabad and Nadia districts till tomorrow.

The metropolis wore a deserted look with most people remaining indoors during the day.

Most schools in the city and other southern districts have closed for the summer with the Chief Minister asking for an early closure to protect the children from the searing heat.
