Heatwave: Toll crosses 1,600 mark in Andhra Pradesh

The death toll due to sweltering heatwave sweeping Andhra Pradesh crossed the 1,600 mark today with 146 more persons losing their lives in the last 24 hours, officials said.
"As per the information available till 8 PM , the toll has reached 1,636," an official of State Disaster Management Department told PTI here.
Yesterday, the toll had reached 1,490.
Prakasam district has recorded the maximum number of deaths at 333, followed by Guntur - 233 , East Godavari - 192, Visakhapatnam - 185 , Vizianagaram - 177 , Nellore - 163, Krishna - 78 , Chittoor- 64 , Srikakulam - 60 , Anantapur -56, Kadapa - 38 , Kurnool - 34 and West Godavari - 23.
The figures pertain to the period from May 18 till 8 PM today.
According to the MeT department, heat wave conditions prevailed today over some parts in the districts of Guntur and Kurnool of Rayalaseema.
Rain occurred at a few places over Rayalaseema and at isolated places over coastal Andhra Pradesh, it said.
The highest maximum temperature of 47 degrees Celsius was recorded at Jangamaheshwarapuram.
