The capital Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 32.6 degrees celsius and a minimum of 25.2 degrees celsius.
The city received nearly 35mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours.
While 10 people were killed in Jaipur, two were killed in Dausa district of Rajasthan.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh took stock of the situation in the state by calling up Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot over phone, a state government spokesperson said.
In Jaipur, many people have been sent to safer areas following the heavy downpour. Till this morning, the city has received 300mm of rains, the Met department said.
Schools and colleges have been shut till the situation improves, the sources said.
In Kashmir, a Border Security Force post and eight residential houses were swept away and five BSF troopers were injured and one was missing in a cloudburst near the Line of Control in Gurez sector in Bandipora district.

The cloudburst occurred near Tulail, 140-km from here, in the wee hours washing away a BSF post and eight residential houses, officials said.
Five BSF jawans were rescued in an injured condition, they said adding a head constable was missing and efforts were on to trace him. MORE
