A call made on the "Suhita helpline" by the husband of a woman being ill-treated in Muscat helped her reunite with her family, Maharashtra State Commission for Women said today.
Commission chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar said Ambernath resident Farida Khan had gone to Dubai through an agent, on being promised a job there but she later stopped contacting her family.
"Her husband Adul Aziz Khan called up the Suhita helpline 7477722424 and shared his ordeal. He was called to the Commission's office where he said that his wife was promised a job in Dubai and due to financial problems in the family, she went there on January 27 this year," a statement issued by the Commission said.
From Dubai, she was sent to Muscat in Oman where she was being ill-treated, it said.
"Her passport and other documents were taken away so that she could not return. Based on the complaint received by her husband, Rahatkar spoke to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who promptly asked the Indian Embassy in Oman to assist the woman," the statement said.
The embassy arranged for her return and she came back to India on May 1, the statement said.
"After returning, Farida Khan was undergoing medical treatment here and she met Rahatkar today. She has requested Rahatkar to save other women like her who are being treated like servants in foreign countries," the statement said.
