Increasing its carrying capacity, Railways along with Maruti Suzuki today launched a new rake to transport more cars.
Designed by Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO), the 'Flexi deck auto-wagon rake' will carry 318 cars as compared to the current twin-decker rakes with carrying capacity of 265 cars.
The first "Flexi deck auto-wagon rake" consisting of 27 wagons chugged off to Nidavanda, Bangalore from Gurgaon carrying a mixed load of Maruti Suzuki cars including Swift, Dzire, Alto, Wagon R and Omni.
The new rake, with its height adjustable middle-deck is highly flexible and can transport vehicles of multiple dimensions.
"The launching of the newly designed auto-wagon rake will add a new dimension in the rail transportation," said a senior Railway Ministry official, adding "the new rake can move at speed of up to 95 km per hour as compared to 65 km per hour of the existing rakes."
The new rake can travel between Gurgaon and Bangalore in around 5 days as compared to 7 days by road transportation.
The official said transporting cars by new "Flexi deck auto-wagon rake" will lead to reduction in carbon emission making it more environment friendly.
