A "high profile cheat" who used to lure targets by promising to sell them diplomatic cars on cheap rates has been arrested in south Delhi.
"Accused Sanjeev Bhel, 62, was arrested by police on a complaint by a Dehradun resident Nitin Berry who was allegedly cheated along with his friends to the tune of over Rs 25 lakh. He was arrested while trying to escape from his office in Mahipalpur in his car which was stuck in traffic, on August 26," said Ishwar Singh, DCP (south).
During interrogation, it was revealed that Sanjeev Bhel is a "high profile cheat" who has earlier cheated many people and his area of operation is all over India, he said.
The accused used to "cheat" people through his lucrative offers to provide diplomatic cars at very low prices, said the officer.
He was involved in over half a dozen cases of cheating involving crores of rupees with complainants in Delhi, Mumbai and other parts of the country.
"In the latest case with Nitin Berry, he had introduced himself as the sole exporter of diplomatic cars from the embassies and from Auto Expos. He had also told Berry and his three friends that he had good contacts in German embassy and got new cars on 20-30 per cent discount. He further told the complainant that he also has a Diplomatic Car Pool," said the officer.
The complainant and his three friends believed his offer as they had to buy new cars and they paid Rs one lakh as token money and deposited Rs 24.60 lakhs in his bank accounts in 2014 and 2015 for over half a dozen cars including a BMW and Honda City.
The accused however failed to provide the cars and could not return the money. A case was registered at Vasant Kunj (North) police station on August 21 in this regard, he said.
