The statistics were revealed in the Annual Status of Higher Education of States and UTs in India 2015 (ASHE-2015) report released here today by Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) and Deloitte, a multinational professional services firm headquartered in New York City.
"Of the total enrollment of 301.5 lakhs students (55.1 pc male and 44.9 pc female enrollments) in higher education institutes in India, Uttar Pradesh ranks first (46.7 lakhs) followed by Tamil Nadu (32.1 lakhs), Maharashtra (30.8 lakhs), Karnataka (18.6 lakhs) and West Bengal (16.6 lakhs).
This is the fourth such report by Delloite India in association with CII and MHRD.
The report highlights some of latest policy developments in higher education sector such as the introduction of choice- based credit system (CBCS), government scheme for ranking institutions, the role of state governments in improving enrollment figures in higher educational institutes and role of higher education in government's Smart City Mission.
It also points out that the highest share of enrollment (79.2 per cent) is at under-graduate level followed by post-graduate (11.4 per cent) and diploma (7.3 per cent), with all other levels contributing less than 2 per cent.
