Hillary Clinton will be the first female president: Streep
Press Trust of India Philadelphia Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep took to the floor of the Democratic National Convention here to declare her rousing endorsement of Hillary Clinton, saying she would be the first female president in the US but "won't be the last."
Clinton has become the first female presidential nominee of Democratic party.
"What does it take to be the first female anything? It takes grit and it takes grace," Streep, 67, said as she took to stage.
In a moving speech, the actress placed Clinton, who is 68, among the pioneering American women, from Amelia Earhart and Harriet Tubman to Sandra Day O'Connor, Deborah Sampson and Geraldine Ferraro.
"Hillary Clinton has taken some fire over 40 years of her fight for families and children. How does she do it? That's what I want to know. Where does she get her grit and grace? Where do any of our female firsts, our path breakers, where do they find that strength?," said the veteran actress.
Streep told the crowd that they had made history by selecting Clinton, who will make a great first female president.
"Nearly 100 years after women got the vote, you people have made history. And you're going to make history again in November because Hillary Clinton will be our first woman president, and she will be a great president.
"And she will be the first in a long line of women, and men, who serve with grit and grace. She'll be the first, but she won't be the last.
