Himalayan trust feels M S Kohli deserves Bharat Ratna
Press Trust of India New Delhi Himalayan Environment Trust, which was founded in 1989 and include the world renowned mountaineer Edmund Hillary as one of its founding members, feels Mohan Singh Kohli, who led India's first expedition to the Mount Everest way back in 1965, deserves to be conferred with the Bharat Ratna.
Welcoming the government's decision to open the door for sportspersons to receive India's highest civilian award, HET said "millions are thrilled that the firm awardee is Sachin Tendulkar who has popularised the sport of cricket in India to an incredible extent".
But it also felt that one of its very own also deserve the prestigious honour, besides hockey legend Dhyan Chand.
"Equally deserving is captain M S Kohli who has created history in 1965 by leading India's first successful expedition to Mount Everest which electrified and rejuvenated a whole generation of Indians," HET Director, Admin, D K Suri said in a ststement.
"It is important to recall that Captain Kohli, besides surmounting the dizzy and dangerous Himalayan giants, far away from the public gaze, had sacrificed some highly lucrative commercial opportunities," he added.
