Protests were today staged by Hindu outfits and the Karni Sena in Chennai and Coimbatore against screening of the controversial movie 'Padmaavat.'
Activists of Sri Ram Sena and Hindu Sena protested in front of a cineplex, Sathyam cinemas, here where the film was released, amid tight police security.
Holding banners, they shouted slogans against the filmmakers claiming it was a wanton attempt by those with "vested interests" to show native, historical Indian icons in poor light.
They wanted the state government to ban the movie.
The activists were removed and detained, police said.
Giant flex hoardings, a usual fixture during new releases, were conspicuous by its absence at the popular cineplex.
At Coimbatore, about 70 activists of the Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena staged a demonstration.
Holding placards seeking ban on the film, they raised slogans against the movie and its director Sanjay Leela Bansali.
They alleged that the film hurt the sentiments of Kshatriyas and Rajputs, adding, they will intensify their stir.
