Home secretaries of India and Bangladesh meet in Dhaka

Indian home secretary R K Singh who along with his Bangladesh counterpart CQK Mustaq Ahmed today visited the Akhaura Integrated Land Custom Station (LCS) near here told reporters that those were the issues which would be discussed at the home secretary level meeting.

Singh who reviewed the infrastructure development of Land Custom Station here said that the Rs 73.5 crore project which was supposed to be completed by July would be now completed by March next year which would give a boost to Indo-Bangla border trade.

"The relation between India and Bangladesh is excellent and outstanding and we are confident that we would be able to solve many of our problems through discussion," The Indian Home secretary said in the presence of his counterpart.

When asked if the Indian insurgents were still using the soil of Bangladesh for sabotage in Indian side, Singh said the matter would be discussed in the meeting.

"I can say that Bangladesh government is proactive and it did not indulge them and took very effective security action to overpower them," he said.

Singh said, both the countries would discuss in length regarding border management so that both the border guards could manage the border smoothly and added the issues like different terrorist groups including HUJI would also come up for discussion.

Bangladeshi officials who accompanied Home Secretaries at Akhaura LCS said, matters relating to exchange of enclaves, settlement of adversely possessed lands, border killings, human trafficking, narcotics smuggling and illegal cross-border movement would also be discussed.

The two home secretaries were expected to work out a way for 'transfer of sentenced persons and sharing documents of the criminals hiding in each other's land during the talks, sources said.

Home Secretaries of both countries would also focus on further expanding and strengthening mutual cooperation in the security and border-related issues between the two nations and capacity building of Bangladesh police officers.

Indian delegation would include senior officers from the home ministry, external affairs ministry, narcotics control bureau and Border Security Force.
