Honour for London Oly medal winners, participants from Haryana

Of the six medals won by India in the London Olympics, four medals were bagged by players hailing from Haryana or those associated with the state.

The outstanding Indian sports persons who won medals at the London Olympics will be honoured by way of cash rewards in recognition of their exemplary performance in the Olympics by Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, said a state government spokesman.

Stating their performance would inspire many others to take keen interest in sports, the spokesman said the Chief Minister has already announced to give Rs 1.50 crore to wrestler Sushil Kumar for winning a Silver medal in the London Olympics and Rs one crore each to shooter Gagan Narang, badminton sensation Saina Nehwal and wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt for winning Bronze medals in the Olympics.

Hooda has also announced to give Rs 31 lakh to Haryana's ace athlete Krishna Punia for competing in the final of the discuss throw in the Olympic Games. She was among the ten athletes who competed in the final of discuss throw and she was ranked seventh in the world.

This is a significant achievement, which has been recognised by the State Government, he said.

Hooda had also announced to give a cash reward of Rs 21 lakh each to boxer Vijender Singh and wrestler Amit Kumar for qualifying the quarter finals in London Olympics and to Geeta Phogat for becoming the first ever Indian women wrestler to have qualified for the Olympics.

The other 10 participants in Olympic Games, who hail from Haryana, have also been given Rs 11 lakh each. They included Jai Bhagwan, Manoj Kumar, Sanjeev Rajput, Sardara Singh, Vikas Krishan, Seema Antil, Sumit Sangwan, Om Parkash, Anuraj Singh and Sandeep Singh.

Prior to the start of London Olympics, Hooda had announced to give a cash award of Rs 2.50 crore to the winner of Gold Medal, Rs 1.50 crore to Silver Medal and Rs one crore to Bronze medal winner. He had also announced to honour all those players of Haryana who qualified for London Olympics.

Hooda had now also announced to give Rs 31 lakh for those making it to the Olympic finals, Rs 21 lakh for quater-final qualification. The Indian contingent for Olympics had 18 players from Haryana.
