The Kerala government today announced a financial aid of Rs 10 lakh to the family of Kevin P Joseph, victim of an alleged honour killing incident, which drew an outrage.

A cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, also decided to sponsor the educational expenses of Neenu Chacko, the slain youth's fiancee.

Of the total Rs 10 lakh, Kevin's family can use Rs six lakh to purchase land and Rs four lakh for the construction of a house, an official release said here.

The amount would be released from the Chief Minister's relief fund, it said.

Twenty three-year-old Joseph, hailing from Kottayam, was abducted on May 27 by a gang allegedly hired by Neenu's family, who were opposed to their marriage.

His body was recovered from a river in Kollam district the next day.

His family had alleged that laxity on the part of the local police in takin action on a man missing complaint filed by Neenu had resulted in the gruesome killing of the youth.

Opposition Congress-led UDF opposition had stalled the state assembly proceedings last week demanding a CBI probe into the incident.

On other cabinet decisions, the official release said, it was resolved to give a relief of Rs two lakh each to the family of two children who died when the van carrying them fell off a road into a pond in Maradu in Kochi on June 11. They were returning home from a daycare centre when the mishap occurred, also killing a helper.

Rs five lakh would be deposited in the name of the children of Latha Unni, the helper of the daycare centre, the release added.
