A leading hospital here today donated protective masks to police personnel in the traffic department.
Pollution, particularly in a city like Coimbatore, was the cause of diseases like respiratory disorders, asthma, bronchitis, lung cancer and leukemia and also heart and blood disorders, Dr K Guhan, Chief Oncologist in Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, said at a function, where the masks were handed over to 350 police personnel.
Quoting a study, Guhan said Coimbatore and Salem were dirtier than Chennai in Tamil Nadu, due to its climatic conditions. Besides, existence of textile units, foundries and cement factory added to the air pollution, which create risk to the police personnel, who were doing duty in the open for nearly 10 hours.
City police commissioner A Amalraj also endorsed the views of Guhan and said Delhi Government has come out with novel ideas for minimising vehicle pollution.
He also urged police personnel to stop smoking, which was also a major cause for lung disorders.
