"The Palam and Ridge observatory registered a maximum temperature of 40 degrees Celsius," said a Met official.
The Safdarjung observatory, the reading of which is considered as the official figure for the city, recorded a maximum temperature of 38.9 degrees Celsius, a notch below the season's average while the minimum temperature settled at 26 degrees Celsius, also a notch below the normal, the official said.
The observatories at Lodhi Road and Ayanagar recorded a maximum temperature of 38.7 and 38.4 degrees respectively.
The humidity level oscillated between 74 per cent and 35 per cent.

The Met office has predicted overcast conditions for tomorrow.
"The skies will be partly cloudy. Dusty haze is likely to occur towards morning and evening. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover at 41 and 28 degrees respectively," the weatherman said.
Yesterday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 38.6 degrees Celsius while the minimum temperature had settled at 27.4 degrees Celsius.
