West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today announced housing and school schemes for the families of policemen.
"We want model schools in every district. Five of them are being constructed already," Banerjee said at the Investiture Ceremony of the West Bengal Police here.
She also said a housing scheme, under which land would be given free of cost to police officers, was being introduced.
The houses would be built in places like Burdwan, Kalyani, Howrah and Durgapur.
In the first phase, 10,000 houses would be constructed, with the government providing free land. The scheme would be known as 'Pratyasha', Banerjee said.
She said local people who helped the police and fire brigade during disasters could be taken into the police force.
As awards for those performing the best during the year, policemen should be given family tours, Banerjee said.
Despite the financial crunch, the government had been able to recruit 40,000 policemen, 1,30,000 civic policemen and 5000 village policemen, she said.
