Twenty-two students were awarded gold medals in the 14th convocation of the Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Agriculture University today.
Himachal Pradesh Governor and the varsity's chancellor Acharya Devvrat awarded 343 degrees, 90 certificates of honour and the gold medals.
He asked scientists to conduct extensive research on zero budget and develop new farm techniques and also expressed satisfaction that out of the 343 degree holders 222 were girls.
"India is a agricultural country since ancient times when there used to be cottage industries at the village level that catered to basic needs of people. But with the changing times, the situation has changed and it is a matter of great concern that today farmers are committing suicide," the governor said.
The farming sector can be improved by adopting zero budgeting organic farming and system should be developed where farmers do not require loans, he said.
It is also essential to check the use of chemicals in farming as it affects soil fertility and causes health problems, Devvrat said, adding research should reach farmers and should be focused on organic farming.
