Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur said Monday that he had to travel about nine km daily to reach his school at Bagsiad but the state has made rapid stride in the field of education since and is second only to Kerala in terms of literacy rate.

He said Himachal Pradesh now has educational institutions even in the remotest areas of the state.

Launching the ambitious 'Akhand Shiksha Jyoti-Mere School Se Nikle Moti' scheme, the 53-year-old BJP leader said the government has started 30 new schemes in the budget of 2018-19 for the welfare and development of the state.

The scheme was launched from the Government Senior Secondary School Bagsiad in Seraj area of Mandi district.

Under this scheme, names of the old students would be written on the roll of honour board, to be displayed in their schools to motivate the students to work hard and excel in life.

Thakur said the 'Akhand Shiksha Jyoti-Mere School Se Nikle Moti' scheme was launched to honour the old students who have earned their name in different walks of life.
