Kaling said Hulu's lack of concern over ratings has been "the single biggest improvement in my life", reported Digital Spy.
"It's completely set me free as an artist," Kaling told reporters at the TCA press tour.
"It's so short-sighted to look at week-to-week ratings," her co-executive producer Matt Warburton agreed.
"We all know it means less than ever now. It's a relief to not just be confronted with it all the time."
"The Mindy Project" season five premieres on October 4.
