Hundreds greet Aung San Suu Kyi in Nepal

Myanmar's democracy icon and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi was today given a rousing welcome as she arrived here on a four-day trip to Nepal, her first visit in four decades to the country where she lived for some time as a youngster.
Hundreds of cadres of ruling Nepali Congress party and the general public greeted Suu Kyi as soon as she landed at the Tribhuvan International Airport.
She is here to address Nepal's Parliament and deliver a lecture on the relevance of democratic socialism.
Suu Kyi, 68, will also call on President Ram Baran Yadav, Prime Minister Sushil Koirala and meet top leaders of major political parties.

Late prime minister and founder of Nepal Congress, B P Koirala had good personal relations with Aung San, Myanmar's nationalist leader and Suu Kyi's father.
Both the leaders were proponents of socialist international movement in Asia.

The late Koirala also visited Myanmar during 1959-60 in support for the ideology of democratic socialism.
Nepali Congress party had adopted democratic socialsm as its political ideology since 1955.
Suu Kyi will also address a special session of the Constituent Assembly tomorrow and will be accorded a public felicitation on Sunday.
The Nobel peace laureate and leader of Myanmar's National League for Democracy was invited by Nepal's Prime Minister Sushil Koirala to attend the centenary birth celebrations of late prime minister B P Koirala.

The government will welcome her as a state guest.
She will also visit Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, and the B P Koirala Memorial Museum in Kathmandu.
Suu Kyi's mother was Myanmar's ambassador to India and Nepal in 1960, and she lived for a time in both countries.
