Farmers, who were suffering for the past two years for want of feasible price are now happy as the prices had started increasing as traders are buying turmeric by quoting increased price, as they received good demand from North India.
The Hybrid finger Turmeric has good market in Delhi and also in some Western countries. In the beginning of 2014, it was sold at Rs 6459 a quintal, slowly increased to Rs 7000 a quintal in January end, touched Rs 8000 a quintal in the middle of March, before fetching Rs 9669 a quintal today.
R K V Ravishankar, President, Erode Turmeric Merchants Association said the price of the turmeric has started increasing due to receipt of orders from North India. After the Lok Sabha polls, traders expect more orders from the North when the price of the commodity would go up again, they said.
The sale prices at Erode Turmeric Merchants Association sales yard for the finger variety turmeric was Rs 4,818 to Rs 7,291 a quintal, root variety Rs 4,396 to Rs 6,966 a quintal.
At the Regulated Market committee, the finger variety was sold at Rs 6,399 to Rs 7,210 a quintal, root variety Rs 6,199 to Rs 7,089 a quintal.
At the Erode Cooperative Marketing Society finger variety was sold at Rs 6,300 to Rs 7,197 a quintal. Root variety was sold at Rs 6,299 to Rs 7,098 a quintal.
