His slice-of-life films "Vicky Donor" and "Piku" might have given him a huge fan following, courtesy their endearing characters, but for director Shoojit Sircar political thrillers will always remain his first love.
Sircar made his directorial debut with 2005's "Yahan", a war-romance drama set against the backdrop of Kashmir.
His third on-screen outing, "Madras Cafe" (2013), was a political espionage thriller set in the late 1980s and early '90s, during the time of Indian intervention in the Sri Lankan civil war.
Shoojit said he came to the film industry with the sole purpose of making such movies and never in his wildest imagination he thought that he could direct comedy movies.
"The genre of 'Vicky' and 'Piku' is not my first love. I never thought I would do a comedy. I really want to make such (political) films. I come from theatre background. In theatres we talk more about social issues.
"During 'Yahaan' I went to Kashmir to make a documentary and chanced upon a news article about how an army man fell in love with the hand of a girl, who served him tea. Then after that I did 'Madras Cafe'. I love making political films," Shoojit said on the sidelines of NFDC Film Bazaar.

Shoojit is currently planning a couple of more socio-political movies and he feels his success in making such films have been mainly because he has never tried to sensationalise the issues.
"I am planning a couple of more political films. It (the success) depends on not sensationalising the issue and just try and tell a straight story," the director said.
The director's other film "Shoebite", starring megastar Amitabh Bachchan, has been stuck in the cold-storage for almost seven years now.
"It is stuck in the legal battle between two studios. It has been seven years and still not released.
