I-Day to be low key affair in calamity-hit U'khand

The Uttarakhand government will celebrate the Independence Day this year in a low key manner in view of large-scale death and destruction wrought by the natural calamity in the state in June.
Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna will unfurl the tricolor at the Parade Ground here on August 15 but there will be no cultural programmes in the state to mark the occasion.
No other functions except the flag hoisting ceremony will be held at the Raj Bhawan, an official release here said.
A resolve will be made on the occasion to help the disaster-hit people of the state in every way possible, it said.

The High Tea held every year in the evening at Raj Bhawan to celebrate the Independence Day has been cancelled, the release said.
The money thus saved will be deposited in the Chief Minister's Disaster Relief Fund, it said.
Over 6,000 were feared killed in devastating floods, landslides and cloudbursts in the state in June this year.
