Reacting strongly against allegations of their involvement in 'anti-government' and 'anti-development' activities, city-based NGOs accused the central government of trying to "intimidate" them and "silence" their voices.
"We have been fighting against the Gujarat government since 2002 (Godhra riots). We exposed the government several times on various issues since then. Thus, now the government feels that our (NGOs) voice must be suppressed but, we are not going to give up easily and we will continue our fight" People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) Gujarat region general secretary Gautam Thaker said at a press conference.
News reports claimed that the Intelligence Bureau (IB) has submitted a report to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) about the activities of several Gujarat-based NGOs which, according to the IB, are involved in anti-government and anti-development activities through foreign funding.
These NGOs include PUCL, Movement for Secular Democracy (MSD), Maldhari Rural Action Group (MARAG) and Gujarat Sarvoday Mandal, as per reports.
"I would like to clarify that PUCL never took any foreign funds. Why no question is raised when political parties take funds from NRIs," asked Thaker, who was also accompanied by former MARAG director Lalji Desai and convener of MSD Prakash N Shah.
"Though I have resigned from MARAG after taking up the movement against Mandal-Becharji Special Investment Region (SIR), I want to clarify that MARAG does take foreign funds, but functions as per the law of the land. We have nothing to hide. We accept funds in a legal way and anyone can see those records," said Desai, who led a mass agitation against the Gujarat government one year ago against the SIR.
