After being crowned with the Silver Peacock in IFFI, Kaushik Ganguly's 'Apur Panchali' (the song of Apu), will now be released for audiences outside West Bengal.
Recalling how the film received a standing ovation after screening in IFFI, Goa last November, director Kaushik said, "It is a collage of the Ray trilogy shots and retracing the life of Subir Bandyopadhyay who played Apu and went into oblivion after adulation at numerous film festivals abroad.
"It is not a docu-feature in the strict sense as I have built up the plot, but the film revolves around the individual who played the character in Satyajit Ray's 1955 epic, but later on was all but forgotten by the entire world and turned into a recluse and alcoholic," he added.
The film, recently screened at the New York Indian Film Festival will now be screened in theatres in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Vadodara and Surat from tomorrow.
Besides getting the Best Director cap in IFFI, Goa, the film was the official selection in 10 international film festivals.
"Hope the film will now connect to the general, discerning audiences in other parts of the country who read so much about 'Pather Panchali' and get the feel of the epic-classic," Srikant Mohta, one of the producers of the film, said.
