"IGBC put India in 2nd position in world green bldg footprint"

Indian Green Building Council's (IGBC) efforts in facilitating over 4.48 billion square feet of built up area, adopting its rating systems has enabled India become the second country in the world to have the largest green building footprint with projects nationwide, a top official said here today.
Speaking at a green conclave titled, "Smart Built Environment" here, Chairman of CII-IGBC Coimbatore chapter, Rajesh B Lund, said, "the Council has facilitated over 4.48 billion square feet of built-up area adopting IGBC green building rating systems."
"This inturn has put India in the second position in the world green building footprints with projects spread across the nation, he said adding IGBC aspires to facilitate 10 billion sq.Ft by 2022.
In his address, Corporation Commissioner, K Vijayakarthikeyan said Coimbatore should emerge as one of the greenest and smartest cities in the country and in the process set new global benchmarks in green buildings.
He also underlined the need and importance for adopting and promoting energy management practices in government buildings.
This in turn should showcase some of the finest and best practices in energy management worth emulating by others in the country, he said adding in the days to come, all the corporation buildings here should be energy surplus and cater to their own energy requirements.
"Not a single rupee should be spend on energy bills," Karthikeyan said.
Appreciating the initiatives of IGBC in spearheading the green building movement in India, the Corporation Commissioner called upon it to partner with Coimbatore Municipal Corporation in taking forward the Smart City mission.
