The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will develop a new advanced online programme on human rights that could be taken up by senior- level police personnel.
The IGNOU today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in this regard.
The programme, to be developed jointly by the NHRC and the IGNOU, will have separate modules on human rights subjects.
The MoU was signed by IGNOU Registrar (Admin) S K Sharma and NHRC Joint Secretary J S Kochher.
"Our Inter-University Consortium (IUC) platform and SWAYAM portal will be used for disseminating information on Human Rights to the proposed target groups," IGNOU vice- chancellor Ravindra Kumar said.
The regional centres of the university will be used as training centres for spreading human rights education and material developed will be in the form of e-books and printed books, he added.

"The updated material will be more interactive and multimedia tools will be used to make it simple and interesting for the constables to sub-Inspector level which constitutes 80 per cent of the Police Force," according to a release.
The courses -- Basic Programme on Human Rights and Training of Trainers Programme on Human Rights -- was put to use after an MoU was signed between the IGNOU and the NHRC in 2009.
